Bromo Ijen Baluran

Bromo_Volcano_at_Sunrise_Java_Indonesia

Located at Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java, The name of Bromo derived from Javanese pronounciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god. Mount Bromo is an active volcano that sits inside the massive Tengger Massif. At 2,329 metres (7,641 ft) it is not the highest peak of the massif, but is the most well known. The massif area is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Indonesia with its picturesque unearthly panorama.

West of Gunung Merapi is the Ijen volcano, which has a one-kilometer-wide turquoise-colored acid crater lake. The lake, which is recognised as the largest highly acidic crater lake in the world, is the site of a labor-intensive sulfur mining operation, in which sulfur-laden baskets are carried by hand from the crater floor.

Baluran National Park is a forest preservation area that covers about 25,000 hectares of the north coast of East Java. The park offers some great scenery and has organised safari activities. Safari is a much misused term in Asian travel circles but in this case it is appropriate – there is something very African about the savannah grasslands of Baluran, hence the nickname Africa van Java.
